Watermelon-basil crush

It's a warm day in D.C. (is there any other kind of summer day around here?) and I thought I'd try an incredibly easy summer drink recipe that is a fresh, healthy alternative to iced coffee and sweet tea: the watermelon-basil crush.

(Credit for the idea goes to Pound the Hill in Capitol Hill.)

What you'll need:

  • 4 cups of chopped, seedless watermelon
  • Fresh basil (about 20 good-sized leaves)
  • 4 tablespoons agave syrup
  • Ice (I used about 12 cubes)
  • A blender

What you need to do:

  • Put all the ingredients in a blender.
  • Blend.
  • Drink.

(I'm incredibly lazy, so I tend towards recipes that don't have more than two or three steps, tops. NB: Depending on the size of your blender, you may have to do this in two installments.)

Serves two.

This yummy and super-easy afternoon drink is ridiculously refreshing, but looks impressive. If you want a slightly more heterogenous look, you can blend the watermelon and the ice first, then add the basil. This will make the over-all look of the drink pinker, with flecks of green.

This is also delicious with bourbon!
